How can I keep my hamster from hurting herself when she falls on her wooden house?
My hamster loves to climb up onto her wheel, then grab the mesh top of the tank and hang for a few seconds. After which she inevitably falls and hits her head and neck on her wooden log-cabin style house. I hate to see her do this as I'm sure one of these days she'll seriously hurt herself. But I'm at a loss as to how to make her stop, short of taking the wheel out, which is not an option.
A simple, cheap and effective thing to do, would be to cover the top of the cabin with some sory of sponge or bedding, and attatch it with non-toxic glue. That way, she can continue to enjoy her free-fall sessions without any harm coming to her.
Either that, or if you can, move the wood cabin or buy her a smaller house that can be placed somewhere else in the cage, and make sure that the floor is covered with lots of soft bedding.
I've had the exact same problems before, and you need to take immediate action, as one of my beloved hamsters broke her spine this way.
There is not really any way that you can stop her climbing the bars, as most hamsters really enjoy doing it (crazy little things!). But one idea would be to place something heavy, like a stack of books over the area she falls from, so it will be impossible for her to grip the bars.
